Workshop Recap: PRE-LEAP-RE partners and stakeholders discuss the future of LEAP-RE and the activities of PRE-LEAP-RE

Newsroom

The second PRE-LEAP-RE workshop took place in South Africa and held from 24-26 June 2019 in the Western Cape, Stellenbosch, South Africa. We brought together diverse stakeholders across academia, civil society, public institutions and the private sector to discuss the activities of the PRE-LEAP-RE project which has set foundation for future collaborative African Union-European Union activities in the field of renewable energy (RE) and the future of LEAP-RE, the collaborative project that will succeed PRE-LEAP-RE.

Where did we meet?

The workshop will take place at Protea Marriot Hotel Stellenbosch (Techno Ave, Techno Park, Stellenbosch, 7600).

Who hosted the workshop?

The event was hosted by the Department of Science and Technology of South Africa (DST) in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Algeria (MHESR)and the German Aerospace Center (DLR-PT).

A few exhibitors were available at the venue of the workshop.

Over seventy participants travelled to Stellenbosch from six European countries and eight African countries.

Participants came from governmental bodies, universities, SMEs, public institutions and the private sector. A complete list of registered invitees can be found here.

What was the workshop structure?

The workshop ran over three days, the focus for the first two days was on fine-tuning the details necessary for the development of LEAP-RE alongside the participating stakeholders. On third day, only the consortium members remained and they then had the opportunity to finalise the multi-annual roadmaps and assess the contributions that were received during the first two days to strategise for the best way forward for LEAP-RE.

During the first two days, PRE-LEAP-RE facilitators and moderators presented the four background papers that touched on roadmaps & ecosystem; funding & private sector, long-term perspective and the individual funding & contribution regulations. The presentations were followed by discussion sessions to ensure that the stakeholders adequately understood the roadmaps and at the end of each day, there was a closing summary. Find the roadmaps here.

The hosting partner, DST also scheduled in tours during the 3-day workshop, one to the Energy Storage Innovation Lab at the University of Western Cape and the other to the Helio100 Farm at the Stellenbosch University.
