WE ARE A TEAM OF RENEWABLE ENERGY ACTORS, PAN-AFRICAN AND PAN-EUROPEAN ORGANISATIONS, SMES AND RESEARCH INSTITUTES.

The relevance of energy is well consolidated in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which intends to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path. Among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, Goal 7 is fully dedicated to energy.

The Sustainable Energy for All initiative, together with the World Bank and the International Energy Agency (IEA), are also redesigning the framework of access to better highlight the link between energy, services and local development.

Within fourteen months, PRE-LEAP-RE will prepare a European Joint Programme (EJP). It will set the foundation for future collaborative African Union-European Union activities in the field of renewable energy (RE). This project forms the basis for long-term African-European collaboration in RE and will contribute to a better understanding of the AU-EU ecosystem.

The core activities of PRE-LEAP-RE are structured in four main pillars:

First, identifying and analysing existing cooperative initiatives between Africa and Europe in the field of renewable energy. The aim is twofold: establishing synergies with ongoing initiatives and avoiding duplication of efforts while also prioritising challenges that have been lightly covered or untouched by other projects.
Second, and based on the results of the first pillar activities, to design a Research and Innovation Agenda, supported by its corresponding Human and Institutional Capacity Building Agenda.
Third, to elaborate the organisational and funding principles for the efficient and sustainable management of the future EJP.
Finally, to build a stable multinational network of public administrations, academia, civil society and private sector.

What are the objectives of the PRE-LEAP-RE project?

To enlarge and strengthen the interactions of relevant stakeholders to build a joint strategic R&D&I programme and collaboration framework recognised and supported by the European Commission and national actors with funding potential while addressing the needs of the public and respective end-users (in particular RTOs and SMEs in the partner countries of the programme).

Who are the PRE-LEAP-RE project participating partners?

PRE-LEAP-RE gathers 17 partner organisations forming a team of European and African experts in this collaborative project, they focus on the energy sector and beyond.

What is the European Joint Programme (EJP)?

EJP is an H2020 instrument designed to support coordinated national research and innovation programmes. It is designed to pool rather large national programmes, resources and capacities. The aims are not only to bring together resources in terms of funding, but also in terms of capacity building, networking, demonstration and dissemination activities. The EJP under preparation by the PRE-LEAP-RE project shall be launched under the Framework Programme Horizon 2020.
